Devils On To The Final Four

(Everett, WA) – The Lower Columbia College women's basketball team has earned a clash with the Titans as they advanced to the NWAC Final Four with a pair of playoff victories at the NWAC Championships.

Following a 60-49 Sweet 16 win over Umpqua on Saturday, the Devils backed it up with a hard fought 85-75 Elite 8 win over Whatcom on Sunday.

In the Sweet 16 matchup, the Devils forced Umpqua into 36 turnovers, 19 of which were from direct steals.  The defensive minded Devils held the Riverhawks to 21 percent shooting from behind the arc.

LCC jumped out to a 20-9 lead after the first quarter but Umpqua was able to get back into the game.  Up by four in the third quarter, LCC put the clamp back on to get the victory.

Jodi Noyes scored 16 points to lead LCC scorers. Danica Schmidt (#11) scored 11 points, pulled down 11 rebounds.

Starting guards Michaela Harris and Katelynn Forner both had to leave the game with ankle injuries but they were hopeful to be available in the Elite matchup with Whatcom.

Forner gave it the college try against the Orcas, but she was taken out of the game after 10 minutes of playing time when it was obvious that she was hobbled due to the ankle sprain.  Harris was able to bounce back big time.  She scored 18 points and had two huge slashing buckets when Whatcom got back into the game.

LCC was down one (19-20) to Whatcom after the first quarter but LCC then dominated the second quarter 31-16.  The Devils were 11 for 16 in that second stanza and took a lead that they would not relinquish.  Not that Whatcom didn't mount a comeback.  The Orcas went on a 9-1 in the fourth quarter to get within three.  But the Devils answered with a 13-4 run that clinched the victory.

Jazlynn Novelli had a huge game off the Red Devil bench.  In just 19 minutes of playing time, Novelli was 10 for 16 from the floor and scored a game-high 26 points.

Noyes had another big game with 16 points and eight rebounds as her recruiting stock continues to rise.

With Forner unavailable, Paige Mace stepped up big time.  Mace played 29 minutes and scored five points with five assists.

Schmidt had another box score stuffer with eight points, seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks.

So it's on the Final Four for the 6th time in school history.  LCC will take on an undefeated Lane team which blasted Spokane 99-55 in the Elite 8 on Sunday. The Titans are 28-0.

The Devils opportunity to slay the giant will be Saturday March 26th at Everett CC. Game time will be at 5:00 pm.  The other semi-final matchup features Clackamas against Peninsula.  Saturday's winners will then meet for the NWAC Championship on Sunday March 27th at 4:45 pm.
