Red Devil soccer's goal of winning the NWAC championship came to an end on Friday, November 11, as the Spokane Sasquatch out scored the Devils 4-1 in the NWAC semifinals match at Tukwilla, WA.
LCC outshot Spokane (CCS) 11 to 6 in the first half and controlled the time of possession but none of the Devils shots found the back of the net. It was Spokane that struck first in 43
rd minute when CCS's Kaylee Gallegos found a
bouncing ball in front of her and hit it around LCC's
Kyla Pires to give Spokane the 1-0 lead going into the half.
The Second half started right where the first ended, with Spokane netting a quick goal less than a minute into the half. Lower Columbia did not give up though as the Devils continued to attack and finally got one past Spokane's goalie in the 53
rd minute when
Lauren Maxfield fought through three Spokane defenders to cut Spokane's lead to one.
Unfortunately, that was as close as the Devils would get, Spokane scored again 4 minutes later and then put the nail in the coffin in the 63
rd minute when CCS's Ellie Johnson hit an unassisted goal to make it 4-1.
Despite the loss, it was a great year for Red Devils soccer as they went undefeated in the regular season and captured the West Region title for the first time in team history. There is already a lot of excitement among the team for next season and the goal remains the same, hoisting that trophy.
