What A Year! Devils Close With Sweep Of TCC

The Lower Columbia College volleyball season was anything but normal. But it was fantastic!

LCC parents and fans finally got to watch their team play in the season finale on Wednesday May 19th at Myklebust Gym. Those fans were not disappointed as the Devils defeated Tacoma 3-0.

The set scores were 30-28, 25-11 and 25-22.

The opening set was a classic.  The Red Devils and Titans went back and forth as the Titans held off four set points.  Once the Devils finally came through, they were able to cruise in the second set.  Tacoma did not go away and the Devils had to close strong to complete the sweep.

Prior to the match, departing sophomores Zoe Naugle, Kaylee Barnum, Karsyn Zaragoza and Taylor Gould were honored with gifts, framed photos and plenty of hugs.  All contributed to the victory.

Naugle had five kills and nine blocks.  The Providence University bound Naugle ended up leading the NWAC in blocks per set (1.58) and was number three in total kills (103).

Emma Nelson, who will return next season, had 27 digs against Tacoma.  Nelson, who won the AVCA national Player of the Week honor, capped off the NWAC dig title with 271. She was 99 digs ahead of her nearest competitor.  Nelson also led the NWAC with 6.61 digs per set.

Camryn Wilson, another sophomore who plans to return next season, led the Devils with 11 kills Wednesday night. She also had nine digs.  Wilson ended up third in the conference in total kills with 100, three behind her teammate Naugle.  Wilson was also third in the NWAC in total digs with 159.

The setting has been outstanding this season and with the shared duties between Zaragoza and Amanda Holm there were no eye-popping individual numbers.  But both were very good.  Zaragoza in her final LCC match had 16 assists and 11 digs.  Holm had 14 assists and six digs.

Gould had six digs in her final match. Her spirit and personality was a huge reason the Devils were consistently able to rise to the occasion.

Barnum and Zaragoza not only helped get the win, but they also played two softball games earlier in the day. Both showed great character by playing two sports well and both achieving in the classroom while also holding jobs.  Both are off to play college softball at the next level.

Angela Sullivan had a bright match with five kills.

The Devils finished the season 10-2.  It will be a quick turnaround as next season already looms with practice starting on August 1st.

Right now the team just wants to take a break and smile about a strange season worth of great achievements.
