The Lower Columbia College women's basketball team was on the floor playing the North Idaho Cardinals in the opening round of the NWAC basketball championships when word of a pending tournament suspension was working its way around The Walt Price Fitness Center at Everett College. The decision was made to close the campus and suspend the tournament but not before the game with the Devils and the Cardinals was completed.
Â
It was a defensive struggle throughout and LCC uncharacteristically struggled to shoot the ball. North Idaho came away with a 53-50 victory ending the Devils season with a record of 21-9.
Â
Lower Columbia made just one of eight three-point attempts and shot just 32 percent from the floor. The Red Devils also committed 24 turnovers.
Â
Despite the struggles, LCC was in it at the end.
Cherita Daugherty hit the lone trey of the game with :28 seconds left to pull LCC within one point 51-50. Anna Schrade hit two clutch free throws after she was fouled with the shot clock running down. Daugherty's desperation three at the buzzer was off and LCC was eliminated.
Â
The Devils played good defense. North Idaho was 0-11 from distance and they also were held to just 32 percent shooting. But the offensive struggles were key as LCC was held to 20 points below their season average per game scoring.
Â
Daugherty gave it her all in her final LCC game. She scored 14 points with eight rebounds. Freshman post
Jodi Noyes had a good game as she scored 13 points with 10 rebounds.
Â
Madison Mosier scored eight points in her last Red Devil game.
Michaela Harris had nine points off the Red Devil bench.
Â
LCC heard about the impeding suspension at halftime but head coach
Lucas Myers offered no excuses. "We must have missed six lay-ins and it was just one of those rough shooting days", he said.  "It certainly was somewhat surreal with the news about the suspension looming, but my team played great defense and they fought back to have a chance at the end. The perspective is that we had a great season and came up with some huge wins. I'm going to miss our sophomores but I'm really excited about our big freshman group getting better and some talented recruits coming in."
