Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

A Win And A Milestone On Sophomore Night

The Lower Columbia College men's basketball team played on the home court for the final this season and they made it a memorable night.

Six LCC sophomores were honored prior to the game and they went out and scored a combined 66 points in the Red Devils 89-64 victory over Pierce on Saturday February 22nd.

The game was tied 39-39 at halftime but the Devils came out flying in the second half outscoring the Raiders 50-25.

The night belonged to the sophomores and in particularly Samaad Hector.  In his final game at Myklebust Gym Hector scored 16 points with 16 rebounds.  With game in hand and the final media timeout called, Hector was given a commemorative basketball marking his achievement of being the all-time single season rebounder in Lower Columbia history.  Hector passed Nate Lewis from the 1983 team who had 411 boards in a single season.  Hector now has 413 and he is just 11 rebounds away from getting the career record of 707 set by Mark Herold back in 1991.

But the other sophomores also played well.  Alexis Angeles had 15 points including a dunk at the end of a sequence that had Red Devil fans roaring and out of their seats.  Hector chased down a Raider and blocked the ball off the backboard and the ball was thrown up the floor for an Angeles dunk. The crowd went crazy.

Martis Johnson had a solid game with 15 points, three rebounds and four assists.  Travis Patrick had six points, four rebounds and two assists.  Louden Wardius had four points, three boards and four assists.

Cody Young had the place energized with his relentless play including 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Freshmen Jonah Crumpton-Murray (8 points) and Taylor Pomeroy (7 points) also contributed to a big victory.

The Raiders were led by the 13 points from John Staggers.  It was also the final game at Myklebust Gym for Raider head coach Bill Mendelson, who is retiring at the end of the season.  Mendelson has 402 victories and there have been some classic Raider-Red Devil matchups in his long and successful coaching career.  The NWAC will miss coach Mendelson.

The Devils are one win away from clinching at least a share of the West Region championship.  A win at Tacoma in the regular season finale on Wednesday will give the Devils the top West seed into the NWAC championship tournament.  LCC and South Puget Sound are tied for first at 12-1 with each team winning on the others home court.  The Clippers close out league play Wednesday night at Centralia.
