Devils Clinch Yet Another NWAC Championship Berth

The Lower Columbia men's basketball team went to Aberdeen on Saturday February 15th hoping to avoid a letdown and with a chance to clinch a berth into the NWAC Championship Tournament.

There was no let down. The Devils are going back to the dance for an NWAC-record 40th time.

After a big road win at South Puget Sound last Wednesday, LCC came out fired up on Saturday and went on to defeat Grays Harbor 89-48.

The Chokers gave LCC a tussle earlier in Longview, but there was no drama on Saturday. The Devils jumped out to a 20 point lead at halftime and won going away.

Alexis Angeles led the Red Devil scorers with 18 points. Angeles was 8 for 10 from the floor leading an LCC team that shot a blistering 63 percent from the floor and 69 percent from three-point range.  Lower Columbia was 9 for 13 from beyond the arc.

The Chokers shot just 25 percent on their home floor, harassed by a solid LCC defense.

Samaad Hector is in third place on the LCC all-time single season rebounding list.  Hector had 12 rebounds to go with 11 points and three assists.  Hector needs 12 more rebounds to pass Mark Herold for second place on the single season list and needs 27 to break Nate Lewis' record of 411 boards.  Hector is also 38 rebounds shy of setting the career rebounding mark held by Herold with 707.

Martis Johnson had 10 points and five rebounds.  Taylor Pomeroy came off the bench to score 14 points.  Fellow freshman guard Dawson Fritz had a college career-high seven points to go along with two assists and two steals.

With win, the Devils punch their ticket to the championships in Everett on March 5 and 6th.  Meanwhile, the team has its sights set on a West Region championship.  LCC is 10-1 in the division and tied with South Puget Sound.  Lower Columbia upped its overall record to 22-4.

There are three games left on the schedule including Wednesday February 19th at home against Green River.  Tip-off is at 8 pm. It's LCC Alumni Night sponsored by the LCC Foundation.  All Alumni get free admission.  The Devils then close out the home schedule on Saturday February 22nd against Pierce.  It's Sophomore Night with the start time at 7 pm.
