The Lower Columbia College volleyball team faced the #2 ranked Pierce Raiders on Friday, September 27, at Myklebust Gym. Both teams came into the match with a 1-0 record but it was Pierce that would leave undefeated with a 3-0 win over the Devils.
Pierce came out strong scoring the first five points. After a quick timeout, the Devils came right back scoring four straight points of their own but they were unable to hold off the Raiders attack has they took the first set 25-16.
Set two and three showed just how closely matched these two teams are. Set two never saw a lead larger than three points as the two teams fought for every point, Pierce came out on top with the 25-22 set win.
In the third set, LCC was down 21-15 but refused to back down. Devils
Abigail Brotherton gave the team a boost with a back to back kill and block, along with a kill by Karli Hall that put the Devils within two at 21-19. Brotherton and Hall continued to attack knotting up the set at 23. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Devils would get. The Raiders would get the final two points on kills by Hanna Rongen and Peyton Foster to end the set at 25-23 to win the match.Â
Despite being a main focus of the Raiders, Devils outside hitter,
Ashlynn Cantwell, led the way for LCC with 7 kills and 4 digs. Freshman setter,
Camryn Wilson was all over the court with 5 kills, 11 assists, and 5 digs.
Paige Moorcroft knocked down 5 kills and 2 blocks. Sophomore,
Kiana Scott, had 4 kills and 4 blocks.
Leaders for the Pierce Raiders were Corinne Ongley with 12 kills and 5 blocks. Peyton Foster with 10 kills, 8 digs and Hattey Smith with 43 assists, 7 digs, and 2 aces.
The Devils will look to bounce back on Friday, October 4, when they travel north to Auburn, WA for a 7:00 pm match vs the Green River Gators.
The next home game for the Devils is on Wednesday, October 9, vs the Tacoma Titans.
