Devils Sweep SWOC, Ready For NWAC's

The Lower Columbia College softball team is heading to Spokane with some momentum as they closed out the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Southwestern Oregon.

It was Sophomore Day on Friday May 10th and there were family and friends on hand to watch the Devils play on the home field for the final time in 2019.  For LCC sophomores Sophia Parsons and Allie Hall, they were playing on Heerensperger Field for the final time after 15 years. Both grew up playing in the Kelso Girls Softball Association and for Kelso High School, teams that also use the ballpark at Tam O'Shanter park.

The Devils opened the festivities by blanking the Lakers 9-0 behind the five-inning, two-hit pitching of freshman Trinity Naugle.  Naugle walked just one batter and struck out four.

With game scoreless after three innings, the Devils blew the game open with nine runs in the 4th.  Sarah Potwin celebrated her final day at home with a grand slam homer.  Parsons followed that up with a three-run blast.

Hall had two hits and two walks.  Valeti Fifita and Kinzey Williams had two hits each.

In between games the sophomores were honored with framed photos, gift bags, flowers and plenty of love from teammates, family and fans.

LCC had to hold on for dear life in the second game.  Ahead 5-1 after six frames, SWOC plated three runs in the top of the 7th before Nizhoni Wheeler buckled down and got the last out.

Wheeler in her final home start went seven innings giving up six hits, four runs with six strikeouts.

Kami Gray came off injury by hitting a two-run double.  Potwin had two hits including an RBI double.  Skylar Hunter and Williams each had two hits.

The Devils closed out the regular season with a record of 28-11. They finished third in the South Region with a record of 19-9.

Once the regular season was completed, the RPI rankings showed LCC as #8.  That means the Devils open up the NWAC Championship tournament against 9th seeded Walla Walla at 12:30 pm Friday May 17th at the Dwight Merkle Complex in Spokane.
