Devils Sweep Tacoma To Take Season Series

The Lower Columbia College baseball team got right after it during a big NWAC West Region double header in Tacoma on Tuesday April 17th.

The Devils scored three in the first and two in the second and went on to win the first game 9-6.  LCC then captured the series with a 6-1 victory in game two.

With the sweep, the Devils take over first place in the West and more importantly take three of the five league games with the Titans.

In the Tuesday opener, LCC jumped on Tacoma starter Alex McBee for three runs in the first highlighted by a DeShawn Johnson RBI single.  Sam Trend-Beacom then had an RBI double in the two run second frame.

LCC starter Jared Akin settled in after getting the early cushion.  He went 5 2/3 innings scattering nine hits, allowing five runs and striking out four.

The Titans made it a game when they plated three runs in the 6th, chasing Akin.  Ryan Kaser came in and stopped the bleeding. Kaser went 3 1/3 innings giving up two hits and one run. Jon Burghardt hit a solo homer off Kaser but otherwise the Devil right hander was outstanding.

JT Strickler went 2 for 4 with two RBI's and two runs scored.  Chase Hodkinson also had two hits and two RBI's.

Hunter Cook came off the Red Devil bench and went 2 for 3 with an RBI.  Trend-Beacom had two hits including an RBI double.

In the second game, freshman pitcher Justin Solt was outstanding.  He went six innings scattering five hits, giving up just one run, one walk and five strikeouts.

Again, the Devils started well. LCC scored two runs in the first inning on three base hits. Noah Andrews drove in a run with a single and Hurst with an RBI groundout.

Hurst then came through with the big hit of the game, a two-run bomb to dead centerfield that hit off the top of the fence and left Minnitti Field.

The Devils then added two more in the 5th inning when Big Meat got a big hit. Chandler Michalek hit a two-run double and LCC was on the way to victory.

Derek Downey came on in the 7th to get the final three outs.

Lower Columbia showed great desire to go to Tacoma and beat such a good team on their home field, twice!

LCC is now 7-3 in the West and 16-6 overall.  Tacoma drops to 6-3, tied with Pierce for second place.

The Devils return to action Saturday April 21st as they host the Grays Harbor Chokers for two games. The action at Story Field begins at 1 pm.  The teams will then play two in Hoquiam on Sunday April 22nd.
