In a four game series that featured 74 runs and 105 hits, the Lower Columbia Red Devils and Yakima Valley Yaks ended up with a split at Parker Stadium in Yakima.
The Devils won both games on Saturday March 17th by scores of 8-5 in 11 innings and 12-11 in 10 innings.
The Yaks came back to take both games on Sunday March 18th by scores of 10-9 in 12 innings and 11-7.
The opener on Saturday featured a back-and-forth war that wasn't decided until the Devils scored three runs in the top of the 11th and then locked it down when
Derek Downey got three fly ball outs.
Sam Trend-Beacom hit a big three run homer and drove in the game winner in the 11th. The sophomore from Australia had five RBI's in the game.
Kyle Sandstrom had three hits and
Hunter Cook had two safeties.
Yancy Bird got the start and went 3 2/3 innings allowing three runs (two earned) with six strikeouts and four walks.
Mitch Lines gave up just a run on four hits in four innings of middle relief. Downey got the victory allowing one hit and one run in 3 1/3 innings.
Game two on Saturday saw the Red Devils rally from down 7-1 after four innings. Yakima Valley touched up LCC starter
Justin Solt for seven runs in two innings including a six run second.
The offense picked up Solt. LCC scored 11 runs from the 5th inning on.
GJ Hurst led the uprising as he ended the game 3-5 with three RBI's.
Ricky Muzzy had two hits and two RBI's.Â
Blayze Arcano and
DeShawn Johnson had three hits apiece.  The Devils pounded out 17 hits in the game.
Zach Threlfall's RBI single in the 10th was the game winner. Johnson got the win with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief.
The first game Sunday was a backyard brawl. The Devils were down to their last strike in the top of the 9th trailing by three runs when Trend-Beacom hit a three run homer to send the game into extra innings.
Trailing 4-0 after four innings, the Devils battled back to score three unearned runs in the 5th. LCC then added three in the 7th highlighted by Threlfall's RBI single.
Drew Barlow had three hits.
Starter
Jared Akin went five innings allowing four runs (three earned).Â
Rance Pittman,
Spencer Burdick and
James Grubb struggled with control in the middle innings. Johnson took the loss despite providing three innings. The Yaks hit a leadoff triple followed by an RBI double to get the win.
The series finale Sunday was won when the Yaks plated six runs in the sixth inning off starter
Zac Horne and relievers
Ryan Kaser and
Rance Pittman.
Kyle Sandstrom settled things down by going 1 1/3 innings of hitless relief.
Down 11-4 in the 9th, the Devils didn't give up and scored three runs including a two-run double from
Hunter Cook.
The Red Devils and the pitching staff will try and collect itself this week as they get ready for another tough four game series against Edmonds. The first two games will be Friday March 23rd at Edmonds, 1 pm start. The two teams will then come to Longview for a twin bill Saturday March 24th at Story Field. The DH starts at 1 pm.
