The Lower Columbia College baseball team knew going into the weekend that it had to win three of four games with Tacoma to take the West Region championship.
They got it done in the first three games, but the clincher was achieved in dramatic fashion.
Down 4-3 with one out in the bottom of the 9th on Sunday May 14th, the Devils collected five consecutive singles to score two runs and trigger a Region clinching pig pile. At the bottom of the pile was freshman outfielder
Kyle Sandstrom who slapped the ball to left field to drive in
JT Strickler with the winning run.
Down to its last two outs, the Devils got consecutive base hits from
Ricky Muzzy, Strickler,
Cameron Campbell, and
Jordan Barchus. Barchus was down 0-2 before he slapped the game tying base hit. Strickler was rounding third when he was lassoed back by third base coach
Eric Lane. Sandstrom then came through with the game winner.
Muzzy had an outstanding game, going 4 for 4 including a triple. Barchus had two hits and two RBI's. Strickler and Campbell also had two hits each.
Nick Tabura got the start and battled all day against the Tacoma attack. The lefty went 5 2/3 innings giving up three runs, four walks and five strikeouts.
Anthony Garcia went two shutout innings to keep the Titans at bay.Â
Trevor Huddleston got the win despite allowing the go ahead run to score on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth.
The second game was anti-climatic as Tacoma scored four runs in the top of the 7th to win 6-5. 19 Red Devils got playing time in the game.
Taylor Davis had two hits.Â
Tyler Parsons went five innings allowing just two runs. Â
Travis Paynter tossed a scoreless sixth.Â
Jake Roes took the loss when he gave up the four runs (three earned) in the 7th.
The Devils have won back-to-back-to-back West Region titles. It was the 38th region title in school history.
The Devils qualify for the NWAC Championship at Story Field May 25-29th. The Devils will open up against the East Super Regional winner Thursday May 25th at 7:35 pm.lÂ
