After a heartbreaking loss at Edmonds on Friday, the Lower Columbia baseball team came back and swept the Tritons Saturday at Story Field.
It was a four game series between NWAC powers that turned out to the be a three game set when rain washed away the second game in a scoreless tie after two innings Friday At Triton Field.
The first game Friday at Edmonds featured a great Tritons comeback. Edmonds scored five runs in the bottom of the 9th capped off with a walk-off two-run single by Taylor Poffenroth, who had six RBI's on the day. The final was 8-7.
LCC got a game leadoff homer from
Ricky Muzzy and a grand slam from
Jordan Barchus in a five run first inning. The Tritons scored three off starter
Taylor Davis in the 5th. The Devils plated a pair of insurance runs in the 8th. But reliever
Trevor Huddleston struggled with his control in the 8th and 9th and the Tritons came up with the big inning to keep their record perfect at 13-0.
The teams turned around and came to Longview for the twin bill on Saturday.Â
Jared Akin and
Anthony Garcia were sparkling on the mound as they combined on a seven-hit shutout. LCC won the game 3-0.
Akin got the win by going five innings allowing just three hits. Garcia got the save with four innings of four-hit ball.
Muzzy went 3 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Red Devil offense.
Anthony Brink took the mound in Saturday's second game and did so with a heavy heart. He had attended his grandfather's funeral earlier in the day and was determined to pitch well in tribute. Grandpa can be proud.
Brink had just one rough inning when the Tritons scored four runs in the 5th including Jake Malone's 2 run homer. But Brink buckled down after that and won the game by a final of 5-4. Brink allowed four runs on eight hits and got a great defensive play from centerfielder
Kyle Sandstrom to lock it down. Sandstrom tracked down a ball over his head in centerfield and made a catch of Malone's well-hit ball to end the game.
Jordan Barchus had an RBI single in the Devils two-run third. LCC then scored three in the 4th highlighted by a two-run double from
Cameron Campbell.Â
JT Strickler followed with an RBI double of his own. Strickler and Campbell both had two hits in the game.
Edmonds tasted defeat for the first time as they are now 13-2 on the season. The Devils go to 11-3 on the season.
LCC will host Linn Benton in a makeup single game on Tuesday March 28th. Game time at Story Field is 1 pm.
The West Region opener is Saturday April 1st as the Devils take on Grays Harbor in Aberdeen for a single game at 1 pm. LCc will then host Pierce in a big single league game Sunday April 2nd at 1 pm.
