LeRoy was the star of the Red Devils first CC basketball championship in 1954. He was second in the state scoring at over 20 points per game and was named all-league and all-state that season. After playing hoops for one year at the University of Oregon, Nelson transferred to Western Washington State College where he was all-league as a junior.  Nelson also stayed active as a player on the AAU circuit and as a fastpitch softball star in the golden era. After coaching and teaching for eight years, Nelson founded a sucessful floor covering business. He served for several years on the LCC Booster Club board.  His daughter Deanne was inducted into the LCC Hall of Fame in 2013.
